In Module 5: Special Populations, you will learn from six experts on the topics of (1) preventing and treating problem gambling among adolescents and young adults, (2) problem gambling among military service members and veterans, and (3) gambling and problem gambling among athletes. Module 5 includes 3 videos and a 10-question quiz. These videos have been professionally captioned, and we recommend watching them with closed captions turned on.

Learners will earn 1.0 hour of continuing education (CE) credit for completing each module, which includes passing a 10-question post-module quiz.

About the Experts

Mr. Dave Yeager is a US Army veteran in recovery for compulsive gambling. He is active in the prevention and recovery support communities. Currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Social Work, Mr. Yeager is a member of the National Council on Problem Gambling’s Military Committee.

Dr. Shane Kraus, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is interested in the study of psychopathology, substance use disorders, Gambling Disorder, and compulsive sexual behavior disorder. He is particularly interested in using behavioral, epidemiological, and neurobiological methods to assess factors that contribute to the development of addictive behaviors and other co-occurring psychiatric disorders among high-risk groups (e.g., US military veterans, young adults). Dr. Kraus received his PhD in clinical psychology from Bowling Green State University.

Ms. Julie Hynes, MA, CPS, IGDC, has an extensive background in problem gambling prevention and responsible gambling, with a special focus on training and education. Her experience spans multiple sectors, including community public health, higher education, nonprofits, research, and consulting. Ms. Hynes is currently the Senior Manager of Responsible Gaming with DraftKings, Inc.

Dr. Jeff Derevensky, PhD, is a James McGill Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University. He is also Director of the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-risk Behaviours and Co-Director of the Institute for Human Development and Well-Being.  Dr. Derevensky’s research has focused on child and adolescent high-risk behaviors. He is actively involved in a variety of research, treatment, and prevention products. He has worked internationally and provided expert testimony before legislative bodies in several countries and his work has resulted in important social policy and governmental changes.

Mr. Paul Buck is Founder & CEO of EPIC Risk Management, the leading global independent gambling harm prevention consultancy. Mr. Buck founded EPIC in 2013, after overcoming his own decade-long Gambling Disorder and its devastating effects. He uses his senior level business experience in tandem with his personal experience of suffering and overcoming a Gambling Disorder to lead EPIC Risk Management. EPIC works across high prevalence, hard to reach sectors including education, the criminal justice sector, the armed forces, financial services, the gambling industry, and professional sports. They are currently conducting the largest gambling education and prevention program ever completed in world sports in partnership with the English Football League. Now working in 24 countries, EPIC’s clients also include regulators, government departments across Europe, and research partners.

Ms. Brianne Doura-Schawohl is founder and CEO of Doura-Schawohl Consulting LLC, a boutique government relations and gaming consultancy firm headquartered in Reston, VA. The firm specializes in problem and responsible gambling policy, and creating valued connections to drive policy initiatives into legislation, regulation, public health policies, and community action. She previously served as Vice President of US Policy and Strategic Development for EPIC Risk Management and served as Legislative Director for the National Council on Problem Gambling. Her experience includes over a decade of leadership in advocacy, public policy, government affairs, and communications. Ms. Doura-Schawohl’s experience spans a wide range of work with executive and legislative branch officials and private sector stakeholders at the international, federal, state, and local levels of government. She has a history of experience and achievements in United States Congressional legislative work, working with stakeholders on both sides of the aisle in state legislatures across the country. Additionally, she has been featured in numerous local, state, national, and international media, including CNBC, Bloomberg, Forbes, ESPN, and CBC.

Continuing Education (CE) credits

  • American Psychological Association (APA) – The Division on Addiction is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Division on Addiction maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This program offers 1.0 hour of continuing education (CE) credit.
  • National Association of Social Workers (NASW) – This program has been approved for 1.0 Social Work Continuing Education hours for re-licensure, in accordance with 258 CMR. NASW-MA Chapter CE Approving Program, Authorization Number D91244.
  • Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) – The Massachusetts Technical Assistance Center for Problem Gambling Treatment is authorized by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to sponsor, conduct or approve continuing education programs for alcohol and drug counselors/assistants (LADCs). This program offers 1.0 hour of continuing education (CE) credit.
  • National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) – This course has been approved by the Division on Addiction, as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider, for 1 continuing education (CE) credit. NAADAC Provider #84058, the Division on Addiction is responsible for all aspects of its programming.
  • The Massachusetts Board of Substance Abuse Counselor Certification (MBSACC) – MBSACC does not accredit online trainings but will recognize most online trainings approved by NASW.

As a result of completing Module 5, you will be better prepared to:

  1. Identify the relative prevalence of problem gambling among adolescents/young adults
  2. Describe the best supported strategies for preventing problem gambling among adolescents/young adults
  3. Determine which adolescent/young adult clients are at especially high risk for gambling-related problems
  4. Describe characteristics of military life that might predispose people for problem gambling
  5. Identify the relative prevalence of problem gambling among athletes
  6. Identify factors that might increase the risk for problem gambling among athletes
